Example: I work on programmable photonic quantum circuits on silicon, especially large Mach–Zehnder interferometer meshes for linear-optical computing. I co-design the optical layer (waveguides, phase shifters, monitor taps) with electronics and packaging to reduce loss, reflections, and thermal crosstalk. I build closed-loop calibration routines—pilot-tone dithering and Bayesian phase retrieval—to reach a target unitary and keep it there. In the lab I measure phase noise, insertion loss, and drift with on-chip photodiodes and homodyne setups to map stability limits. For control I use FPGA or microcontroller drivers, plus PID/Kalman loops, to run heater arrays and modulators in real time. Recent work kept a 64×64 mesh stable for hours at >0.98 fidelity; the goal is a reproducible control stack that scales beyond 256 modes.

Example: I tape out with silicon-photonics PDKs (IMEC/AMF), doing layout in KLayout/Nazca and designing test structures for heaters and interferometers. I handle packaging and alignment—fiber arrays, edge or grating coupling, wafer probing, wire-bonding, and temperature control. I run automated measurements with tunable lasers, optical spectrum analyzers, and balanced photodiodes, scripted in Python (PyVISA/serial). For modeling I use FDTD/FEM tools (Lumerical, Meep, COMSOL) and circuit-level simulators or custom Python to capture mesh and thermal dynamics. I implement calibration and self-configuration algorithms in Python/C++, and integrate them with FPGA or microcontroller drivers.
