2017 STAR Program
OMSA has a great history with our Ochsner STAR Summer Program for High School students. Each year, we put together a 4 part series for the OMSA and STAR Students to interact and learn from one another and we’d like to continue that tradition again this year.

STAR Luncheon (Thursday, June 22nd 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM) BRENT HOUSE CONFERENCE CENTER
The luncheon is an opportunity for the high school students to ask questions about college, medical school, career planning, etc. The lunch will be catered and will take place in the Brent House. OCS students are welcome to stop-by, eat, and chat with the curious STAR students. It would be great to have at least 6 students attend the luncheon.

STAR - Skills Training (Wednesday, June 28th 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM) SIM LAB
Students break into four groups and rotate through four stations. Each station is led by 1-2 OCS students. At each station, the students will learn a different skill, including (1) airway management (intubation), (2) how to take blood pressure, (3) how to start an IV, and (4) suturing. We are looking for ~ 6-8 volunteers to help with skills training.

STAR - Mock Clinical Exam (Thursday, June 29th 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM) SIM LAB
We are looking for at least 7 volunteers to assist with the mock clinical exam. Throughout the program, STAR students take a medical terminology course, bedside manner class, and research ~20 common ailments. During the mock clinical exam, students are broken into groups of 4, and with guidance of an OCS mentor, evaluate a mock patient to determine a treatment plan. Each group is judged and critiqued by a panel of 3-4 OCS students, who will determine the winning group.

EHealth – Skills Training (Wednesday, July 26th 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM) SIM LAB
