The Potential Impact of “30 by 30” on Recreational Fishing
When: Wednesday, July 21, 2021, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. ET

Description: The Biden Administration has outlined a rough framework for conserving 30 percent of America’s lands and water by 2030—an idea embraced globally by scientists to protect biodiversity. But what does this mean for anglers? Experts from the sportfishing community and state and federal fisheries managers weigh in on what “30 by 30” efforts could look like, how fish populations could benefit, and why recreational fishing should be part of the plan for conserved lands and waters.

Speakers:

- Janet Coit, Assistant Administrator for Fisheries, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

- Marc Gorelnik, Chairman, Pacific Fishery Management Council; American Sportfishing Association General Counsel; and Coastside Fishing Club Board of Directors

- Chris Horton, Senior Director, Midwestern States and Fisheries Policy, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation

- Jessica McCawley, Director, Division of Marine Fisheries Management, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

- Moderator: Chris Macaluso, Director of Marine Fisheries, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership

Managing Gulf Menhaden to Safeguard Sportfish and Coastal Businesses
When: Thursday, July 22, 2021, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. ET

Description: More than a billion pounds of menhaden—the important forage fish also known as pogies—are harvested annually, mostly off Louisiana’s coast. It is the largest volume fishery in the Gulf, yet remains largely unregulated. Indications are that menhaden harvest in the Gulf is having a detrimental effect on popular sportfish like speckled trout, redfish, tarpon, mackerel, and others. A diverse group of conservation interests including CCA Louisiana, TRCP, Audubon, and ASA are heading an effort to protect critical habitat and establish ecologically based catch limits in the Gulf. This expert panel representing recreational fishing, coastal businesses, and fisheries science will discuss the impacts of the industrial menhaden reduction fishery, steps that have been taken so far to regulate it, and how to protect coastal habitat from foreign-owned menhaden processors.

Speakers:

- Dr. Aaron Adams, Director of Science and Conservation, Bonefish and Tarpon Trust

- Richard Fischer, Executive Director, Louisiana Charterboat Association

- Jesse Simpkins, Vice President of Marketing, St. Croix Rods

- Mike Waine, Atlantic Fisheries Policy Director, American Sportfishing Association

- Moderator: Chris Macaluso, Director of Marine Fisheries, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership
