Project Title: Arts-based pedagogies in Action

IRB NUMBER: IRB-FY2023-362

Investigator(s): Matthew Kruger-Ross; Andrew Rubas; Pauline Schmidt; Stephanie Almodovar

Project Overview: Participation in this research project is voluntary and is being done by Matthew Kruger-Ross and Pauline Schmidt as a part of their Faculty-Direct Research, and by Andrew Rubas, Matthew Kruger-Ross, and Pauline Schmidt as a part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute.

This research study aims to determine the impacts of integrating arts-based pedagogies in the classroom for both preservice and in-service teachers. One easy way to integrate the arts into the classroom is via trips to local museums and exhibits. We (Kruger-Ross & Schmidt) have developed a series of presentations to address this research concern. The primary outcome is learning to effectively integrate arts- and place-based pedagogies into the secondary classroom. Our research question is: What are the impacts of the integration of arts- and place-based pedagogies in the classroom on both preservice and in-service teachers?

A participant can agree to participate in one semi-structured interview that will be scheduled at a time that is mutually agreeable.

If you are a participant, your participation will take up to 30 minutes and will include:

  • Signing the informed consent,
  • Completing a demographics survey,
  • Completing the Aesthetic mindset survey
  • Participating in a semi-structured interview via Zoom.

The risk of participating in this study is minimal. Potential risks include:

  • A breach of privacy. If participants choose to utilize a pseudonym, there is the possibility that confidentiality could be breached.
  • Participants could experience mild discomfort when reflecting on their experiences and assignments during and after the session.

Participants will be at the cutting edge of research into arts-based pedagogies and contributing new knowledge to the field of teacher education. Participants will also learn from the researchers and be able to immediately take their learning back into their professional lives. Participants will also get to engage in professional development experiences across career levels, with preservice teachers and in-service teachers working alongside one another.

You may ask any of the researchers (Matthew Kruger-Ross, Andrew Rubas, Pauline Schmidt, Stephanie Almodovar) any questions to help you understand this study. If you do not want to be a part of this study, it will not affect any of your studies at West Chester University. If you choose to be a part of this study, you have the right to change your mind and stop being a part of the study at any time. There is no compensation for participating in the study and your grade will not be affected in any way if you choose to or not to participate.
