5. Abstract
Obtaining a PhD in science and engineering leads many to pursue careers applying related
research skills to start independent academic labs or work in industrial R&D. There are many
career opportunities for PhDs that do not directly involve doing research, but leverage a
strong scientific background to interface research knowledge and outputs with industry, the
general public, or government. In this talk I will share two career experiences at the
research interface. I will talk about transitioning from a grad student to being an editor at a
research journal, the overall opportunities in academic publishing, and what working such a
job is actually like. I will then talk about the research programs I have been managing over
the last 3 years in the area of self-driving labs powered by artificial intelligence and robotics
to accelerate scientific discovery.
