Protect Charlotteans Now Petition
Since the sunset of key provisions of HB-142 on December 1, 2020, Charlotte City Council has had the ability to expand non-discrimination protections in our community. We believe that the City Council should pass a LGBTQ+ inclusive ordinance, similar to those adopted unanimously this year in Durham or Asheville. Discrimination should not be tolerated or protected in our city. June is Pride Month, a time in remembrance of the over 50 years since the Stonewall Riots highlighted the marginalization of the LGBTQ+ individuals. With the murder of two Black Trans Women just last month, we believe these protections are essential to providing equal access to employment, housing, and public accommodations.
We, the undersigned, are asking Charlotte City Council to enact enforceable protections based on: gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, natural hairstyles, pregnancy, marital or familial status, national origin, or veteran status. Following the past months of meetings, including a draft framework from the Community Relations Committee, we believe the time past due for an NDO in Charlotte. We urge the Mayor and City Council to protect Charlotteans now.
