Nomination for a BECSSS Scholar
Our annual seminar series is named for Karl Banse, Professor Emeritus in Biological Oceanography, who has been a long-standing pillar of our community. Karl has stated that besides hard work and perseverance, major turns in his career were decided with a great deal of luck, “be it through an accidental conversation at lunch, an almost-missed phone call, or attendance at a somewhat strange seminar.”
In the spirit of Karl’s words, the Banse Early Career Scientist Seminar Series (BECSSS) was born. We focus on bringing graduate students, post doctoral scholars, and new faculty from underrepresented and historically excluded backgrounds to our department to share their innovative research and to connect with our faculty on future career opportunities. We also reserve space for scholars who have chosen careers outside of academia. BECSSS scholars come from all over the country and the world, hosted in person and virtually, to bring their research to us at UW Oceanography.
The BECSS series kicks off Fall Quarter 2021, to be held on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:50pm PST.
