CHRP Tap Scholar Application & Policies

Welcome to Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s Tap Scholar Program. As a part of our 37th Anniversary, we will award up to 25,000 in partial and full scholarships through video and live auditions. Some awards will be given through auditions in Canada, Japan, Brazil and Europe. Since the Tap Scholar program began in 1995, CHRP has given more than $375,000 in tuition waivers to talented, deserving young dancers to support their dreams and aspirations. Past multi-year scholarship winners have included Ian Berg, Star Dixon, Nico Rubio, Jumaane Taylor, and many other leading lights in the tap community.  

Partial and full scholarships are awarded to students based on financial need, talent, skill, attitude, and artistic merit. The Tap Scholar program brings together students from different socio-economic, geographic,  ethnic, and experiential backgrounds in an intense, immersion program that facilitates mutual  appreciation and respect. Tap Scholar Award winners will have an opportunity to study with many of the greatest living masters of American tap and percussive dance, meet peers from around the world and give back to the community by providing critical support to the faculty and festival staff. The Tap Scholar Program runs concurrently with RHYTHM WORLD, August 2-8, 2027 and includes partial or a full scholarship to master classes, courses, Choreographic Residency, Production Residency* and concert admission.  

CHRP education staff will work with Tap Scholar Award winners to design an individual  curriculum based on skill level, program content and faculty preferences.

Tap Scholar Policies  

These rules are intended to ensure that you receive the most from your experience and that a respectful and  friendly environment is maintained for the entire program.  

• Applications must be received by January 15, 2027.

• Applicants will be informed of decisions by January 29.

• Applicants who receive a scholarship offer must accept or decline the scholarship offer by February  5 and complete registration process by February 19. 

• Tap Scholar Award winners are required to use the full value of the award. If a student cannot use the entire award, it will be given to another student. 

• Tap Scholar Awardees must attend an orientation and rehearsal on August 2 from 6pm - 8pm at either the Fine Arts Building or the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago. 

• Awardees must be punctual and attend ALL registered classes, meetings, and support activities.

• Awardees must pay the $35 festival registration fee. 

• Award decisions are final and Awards are non-transferable. 

• Awardees must be 12 - 22 years old at the time of the festival (August 2-8, 2027). When computing tuition total, scholarship students must mark the full price, not discounted or early bird tuition prices. 

• Awardees must register for the summer festival by February , 2027. Forms must be received by this date. If we do not receive your festival registration postmarked by this date, the scholarship will be offered to another student. If you accept a scholarship and fail to notify CHRP of a change in your plans, you will be ineligible to receive future Tap Scholar Awards. 

• To repeat, Tap Scholar Awardees must be available 6pm - 8pm August 2nd, 2027 - the night prior to the start day of the festival - for an orientation and short rehearsal

• Awardees will also be performing a short piece together as an ensemble August 6, 2027.
