HOC Week Experts Connect
Hour of Code Week is from Dec. 3-7 in our Vermont schools. Code.org has created this event and supports it every year and encourages schools to take part. Students experiment with a wide variety of apps and programs that highlight the uses of programming languages and coding. Code.org is an advocate of Computer Science so it dovetails nicely with their overall mission. In Vermont, we try to host a number of "events" whereby experts in the field of Computer Science "chat" virtually with schools from across the State. We are looking for small businesses, innovative companies, and just regular computer science people (nerds maybe even) to talk to our students and just allow them to see that there are serious careers and career paths available to them if they believe that coding and programming is something they have an interest in. IF you think your business or organization has something to contribute to this conversation, I urge you to fill out this form and we'll contact you to see what we can put together.

Some things to consider:
Schools need to work in schedules. Usually classroom sessions are about 45-55 minutes in length. Figure a typical school day goes from 8:30-2:30 for the most part, with some buffer on either end of that. Lunch time--11:30-1:00 is not ideal of course and anything after 3PM simply won't work.

It is best in this environment for you to be fairly flexible in your delivery. We are not necessarily looking for a canned presentation.. more along the lines of show the students something you are working on, and then let them ask some questions.. maybe you even pose some kind of (fairly simple) problem to them.

It does not have to be formal-- in fact informal is usually better. A facilitator will help to work the technology and keep the conversation flowing... you just need to be willing to ask questions and answer their questions around the work you do.
