I pledge to #KeepWetlandsWell
(French version: https://bit.ly/3j8o7uG)

We can help keep wetlands and wildlife healthy by practicing two simple actions: picking up litter and staying on the path. Read more below to find out how these small actions make a big difference.

"On my next visit to a wetland, I pledge to #KeepWetlandsWell by picking up at least one piece of trash and sticking to the middle of the trails."

Pick It Up, Please...Litter continues to be a problem for wetlands. Wetland wildlife may get entangled in litter or consume it. Wetland water and soils are contaminated by it. A carcinogen from degrading plastic water bottles, for example, can cause reproductive problems or liver issues  in both people and wildlife. Even biodegradable paper products may send  toxic ink into the soil and, subsequently, into the plants. Plants are the wetlands' infrastructure: impacting them degrades wetland function and threatens wildlife.
Stick to the Path...When we walk along the edge of a path or a trail in a wetland, our footsteps erode the path's gravel or soil edges. This degradation sends sediment into the lakes, wetlands, streams, and rivers where it has a detrimental effect on water quality, fish and smaller organisms. The extra sediment can also contribute to aquatic algae overgrowth which depletes the water's oxygen content.
