Exploring a Name Change

The Backstory

As we explore a name change, we want to look at where we've been, where we are, and where we hope, by grace, to go in the future.

Kortright’s roots go back to 1980 (temporarily known as "South Guelph Presbyterian Church" - see full history HERE), and we moved into our original building at the corner of Kortright and Scottsdale (now Hospice Wellington) in 1983 and enjoyed many great years of ministry before purchasing the building that was formerly University Village Public School. We have been here in our current location on Devere Drive since 2005 (almost 20 years!) and continue to experience vibrant worship, teaching, community, and outreach.

Re-vitalized Mission

In recent years, we have refined who we are as a church and we arrived at three statements.
We are:
Rooted in Jesus
Growing as a community
Becoming trusted neighbours.

This process gave us and continues to give us a laser-sharp focus on who God has called us to be and what He has called us to do. We've recently met with and looked at all the various ministries of our church and have started to ask each other how we can better fulfill the mission that God has given us. This has been an inspiring and (at times) stretching process.

Renewed Outreach Focus

In the past 5 or so years, we also gone from being a fairly unknown entity in our neighbourhood to being quite well known. Through consistent community events, our Food Security Garden, the food cupboard, and simply being a place of greater welcome, we are making inroads to building more trust with our neighbours, which is a privilege we should not take lightly.

What We’re Looking For

First and foremost, we're looking for your stories and feedback. Whether you have been here a few months, a year, or all 44 years, you have something to share about this. Perhaps you have a special attachment to our current name, or perhaps you were new and drove down Kortright Road thinking, "I wonder where Kortright Church is?", or maybe you've never thought too hard about it. Wherever you fall, we hope you'll take a couple of minutes to offer your perspectives as we discern.

Why This is Important

Our staff (both past and present) have broached this question about a name change. It never quite felt like the right timing. However, it seems as though God has really been up to something in our church. We have this new mission, we are investing heavily in our neighbourhood, and we have a new pastor starting in September, marking a new era for us as a church. Perhaps now is the time to explore a name that might better represent who we are both now and into the future.

"What's in a name", anyway? Let's find out together!
