Fortitude Foundation, Inc. is pleased to offer this annual scholarship fund named in honor of our beloved founder, Mrs.Thelona Manning-Steele.
Mrs. Manning-Steele was not only a founder of Fortitude Foundation, she was a charter member and charter president of the Gwinnett County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Mrs. Manning-Steele was an engineering major and graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
African-American students (graduating high school seniors, community college students, and undergraduate college students) who reside in Metro Atlanta.
GPA of 2.5 or higher (official transcript must be submitted via email to

Letter of recommendation from a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) teacher.
Students must attend (or plan to attend) a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and
major in a STEM field Note: This does not apply for adult education scholarship.
Scholarships will be awarded in the following amounts:
High school graduating senior - $1000
College undergraduate student - $1000
Adult education technical/community college - $500

PART IV: RECOMMENDATIONS
Please submit recommendation letters from the following:
1. STEM Academic Teacher (Academic Recommendation must be on school letterhead)
Acceptable Academic recommendations are Science, Math, Technology, and Engineering.
The community service must be unpaid. Examples of community service include Hands on Atlanta, Gwinnett Great Days of Service, Hosea Feed the Hungry, Partnership Against Domestic Violence (PADV), AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run, Gwinnett Relay for Life or Mentoring, Tutoring and Outreach through your school, youth or faith group.
A. Each reference letter must include the following information:
Name, occupation, telephone number and e-mail address of each reference;
How long they have known you;
The type of community activities in which you have been involved and;
A description of your character and work ethic.
B. Each letter of recommendation must be submitted by e-mail to

C. At least one letter of recommendation, but no more than three letters or recommendation must be included in your application packet.
PART V: ESSAY
You will be assessed on your ability to communicate your thoughts. Each essay must be 500 words or less. It must be submitted at the time of completion of the online application.
