Tell Brown University: Don't Cave to Musk and Trump

The Trump Administration is threatening to cut $510 million of funding from Brown University unless it makes an array of policy changes. As proud students, alumni, faculty and parents we urge Brown to refuse any Administration demands that would weaken academic freedom, free speech, or student safety.

We understand that the loss of research grants would be hugely detrimental to the university’s budget. But that short term hardship pales in comparison to the long term cost of forsaking core principles, both for Brown and our society at large. There could be no better use for the University's endowment than to safeguard our democracy.

Our country is at a crossroads. The Trump Administration is attacking our government and dismantling due process and free speech. It’s essential that institutions like Brown stand up and fight back, especially in the wake of the craven compromises made by other universities, major law firms, and corporate America.

Brown’s 1966 statement on Academic Freedom “affirms that faculty and students alike shall enjoy full freedom in their teaching, learning, and research.” We can’t think of a more important moment in the university’s history to ensure that this commitment is defended.
