Students and our allies call on Superintendent Juneau and the Seattle School Board to sever all existing contracts and cut any financial ties with the Seattle Police Department.
#StudentsHaveHadEnough. We've had enough policing in our schools and racist police violence in our streets and homes. We've had enough with the police budget increasing while our schools remain underfunded. We've had enough with cops instead of counselors in our schools. We've had enough with no accountability for Charleena Lyles, Shaun Fuhr, John T. Williams, Ryan Smith and others.
The Seattle Police Department has repeatedly demonstrated with their actions that Black and Brown humxns are expendable to them. Through the actions of this past week, the police departments here and around the country have become symbols of fear to the children those officers were sworn to protect.
In response to the killing of George Floyd, Minneapolis Public Schools voted unanimously on June 2nd to terminate its contract with the Minneapolis Police Department. Similar actions are being pursued by school districts in New York, Illinois, Oregon, North Carolina, and more. We demand Seattle Public Schools follows suit and immediately terminates its contract with SPD.
We appreciate Superintendent Juneau's words in honor of George Floyd, and agree with her that "we must realize that this fight to become an anti-racist organization and to make sure our Black and Brown children and young people thrive is completely within our power." We are asking that she make this commitment in more than words-Serve and protect students of color by ending your partnership with the Seattle Police Department today.
