Buena Vista City Public Schools Return to School Parent Decision Form
Dear Buena Vista City Public Schools Family,

Buena Vista City Public Schools has developed the following Return to School Plan for the 2020-2021 school year. This plan includes a combination of in-person and distance learning options for each grade level. Each student will be issued an electronic device in order to participate in distance learning. The first day of school for students will be Monday, August 31st.

TERMS for Clarification:
Remote Learning - Student does not attend school. All learning is provided through learning packets and/or materials that have been downloaded on a flash drive. No Internet connectivity.

Virtual Learning - Student does not attend school. All learning is provided through the Internet. Great, reliable Internet connectivity.

Distance Learning - Any learning that takes place outside of the school building. This will include virtual and remote learning on days the student does not attend school such as Fridays and the "not in school building" days at the High School.

In-Person Learning - All learning that takes place in the school building.

Grade Level Learning Options:

Option 1: Blended Learning (In-person Learning Paired with Distance Learning - Remote or Virtual)

Preschool-Grade 7: Students will report to school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Students will participate in distance learning on Fridays.

Grades 8-12: Students will report to school on either Mondays/Wednesdays GROUP A (with distance learning - virtual/remote - on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) OR Tuesdays/Thursdays GROUP B (with distance learning - virtual/remote - on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). The high school administration will let parents know which days their child will be scheduled and will work with families to schedule siblings on the same days.

Option 2: 100% Distance Learning (Remote or Virtual)

We understand that coming on campus may not be an appropriate choice for every family. Parents may choose a 100% distance learning option for their child(ren). This model would include approximately 3-6 hours of educational engagement each day, depending on grade level and course load, with traditional grading practices in place. This option will be much more rigorous and time-intensive than our "Continuation of Learning" activities from the Spring of 2020.

Families choosing this model will need to indicate whether their child will be participating in Option 2 via distance learning Remote OR participating in Option 2 distance learning Virtual (indicating your child has reliable internet access).

The Plan for a Return to Phase I or Phase II:

At any time, conditions may warrant a return to Phase I or Phase II learning. If schools are required to return to Phase 1 state-wide OR if a community outbreak occurs in Buena Vista and the health department determines we need to close, all grade levels will return to a complete distance learning model. All students will attend classes via virtual or learning packets and/or materials downloaded onto their school-issued devices.

If schools must revert to a Phase II model, grades PK-3, all ELL, and all special education students may, if determined to be appropriate, continue with on campus, face-to-face learning, four days per week. Students in grades 4-12 would return to a complete distance learning model.

Sincerely,

John Keeler
Superintendent
