VAPS' Philosophy in Public Spaces (PIPS) excursion events for schools are run to stimulate philosophical thinking in students. Between 3 - 12 schools attend each PIPS event and bring ~10 students each, then those students are mixed up into groups of 10 and placed with an expert facilitator. The facilitator is a member of VAPS trained in facilitating philosophical communities of inquiry.
PIPS events are run in locations of cultural significance whereby we have access to thought provoking material. Students observe a chosen stimulus (artwork, exhibition, show) with their mixed-school group and facilitator, before beginning a philosophical discussion about the ‘big ideas’ present in their stimulus to begin their community of inquiry discussion. The facilitator guides students towards philosophical questioning and thought processes, however the topic is chosen by the students themselves based on the ideas that the stimulus provoked in them.
*NEW/COMPLEX EVENTS FOR 2024:
1. 18th Oct Melbourne Zoo is a new PIPS event. This will run like any other Year 5-8 PIPS, it's just a new venue.
2. 7th August University of Melbourne Evening is a longstanding event. We use a sliding scale for student attendance costs and also grant funding, e.g., a low-SES school may pay only $10 per student. Don't be scared off by the $50 per student cost. It is only $50 before any subsidies are applied. Enquire within. This event includes food (as it runs from 5pm-9pm), hence the higher cost.
3. 18-22nd November Philosophy Camp. The camp is expected to cost $500-600 per student. This event requires early registration to ensure accommodation can be booked.
