I WANT TO KNOW: ARE GUNS ALLOWED ON CAMPUS?

A growing number of colleges across the nation are being required by state legislatures and courts to allow the possession of guns on their campuses. As students decide where they will attend college, they and their families need access to information on colleges’ policies related to firearms. For many, this information will be an important factor in their decisions.
We believe this environment creates new responsibilities for the trusted providers of information about colleges:
THE U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION should compile data on campus gun policies and include it in the Department of Education’s College Navigator database.
COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS should make sure campus gun policies are clearly explained in college websites and publications and in tours and presentations given to prospective students and their families.
COLLEGE RATINGS PUBLICATIONS AND WEBSITES – such as U.S. News & World Report, College Niche, Kiplinger, The Princeton Review, The Fiske Guide and others – should include this information in each college review.
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS that serve high school college counselors should make this information available to their members and encourage them to share it with prospective college students and their families.
WE REQUEST that each of these individuals and groups carry out these responsibilities so that students and families can make fully informed college decisions.
