Scratch Night is a curated, quarterly works-in-progress physical theater showcase produced by Physical Theater Festival that presents 6-7 short previews that require an audience to further their development. Featured pieces center around contemporary, visual, and physical theater. Our mission is to foster growth of these new theater works, expose diverse forms of theater to Chicago audiences, and bring together different communities of Chicago artists for conversation and possible collaborations. A portion of Scratch Night proceeds support Physical Theater Festival, which is in its 8th year of bringing international theater works to Chicago each summer.
Our next show will kick off the next annual Physical Theater Festival on Monday, July 18, 2022, at the The Den Theater! All participating artists will be required to attend a mid-point rehearsal on July 10th from 2-4pm, location TBD.
Submissions should be:
-8-12 minutes in length by the time of the show
-an original creation
-centered around contemporary, visual, and/or physical theater in style
-able to be transferred artistically and logistically to a fringe-like stage
What you as the artist will receive in perks:
-exposure to Physical Theater Festival's exciting and diverse audience
-direction or feedback at our midpoint rehearsal
-a guarantee that you will meet a new artist/s (and possibly your future collaborator/s!)
-quality, edited video of your performance
-a small stipend as a thank you for your performance
We would ideally like to feature works currently in the workshopping or rehearsal process. However, if you have a concept you've been wanting to get in front of an audience, we're open to that level of proposal as well. To submit you or your company's work in progress, please fill out the form on the next page!
The submission deadline is June 19th at midnight CST. All performers will be notified of their selection status by June 22nd.
