What gets caught with this service?

  • typographical errors (extra spaces, formatting problems, duplicate/missing words)
  • punctuation errors (incorrect commas, en-dash and em-dashes, the dreaded semi-colon)
  • grammar errors (agreement and tense issues, word choice)
  • spelling errors (homophones, proper nouns)
  • syntax errors (sentence structure)
  • minor line editing in situations that are not to the detriment of the final proof

What do you mean by proofreading/copy editing? Aren't those two different things?

Yep, they are. But terminology gets funny in indie genre fiction. These steps happen after the developmental and line edit, both of which address the quality of the story itself. Developmental editing focuses on issues in the narrative; line editing focuses on how the words tell that narrative. Technically, a copy edit focuses on grammar, typography, and consistency while the proofread is the final review after it's already been formatted and is limited to fixing the appearance of it.

In the indie space, "proofreading" frequently refers to a copy edit performed with the expectation that the actual proofread will be done by a formatter (frequently the author themself) who doesn't have a professional background in editing. This is the service I typically provide, but I'm also qualified to do a traditional proofread. If you want me to proofread something that's already been formatted, the pricing will be about the same but the service will look different, especially if it's been formatted for paperback.

**Please note that my services do not replace developmental and line editing. Anything not ready for a proofread/copy edit will be turned down. Please contact me for any questions regarding this.**

I work in Microsoft .docx files with track changes. Due to issues with permissions, I do not accept links to Google Docs with the instructions to download it on my side.

I do require a sample (1,000 words, preferably from the 2nd or later chapter) to ensure we're a good fit for each other. This can be emailed to me at chloe@cbalice.com now or submitted after you receive your quote. If you submit after receiving your quote, please be mindful that this may cause a delay which could affect the cost if you have a tight deadline.

Proofing samples are available from me on request. You're welcome to see my reviews on Fiverr. They're amazing. https://www.fiverr.com/cabalkin

Feel free to reach out to me on social media for an immediate quote! FB likes to eat messages, but you can get me on instagram and tiktok @cbaliceauthor

What editing process have you gone through with this manuscript? I don't accept or deny clients solely on what your process is; I do the bulk of my editing myself with the help of some phenomenal beta readers. I know everyone's process is different. Your answer here only serves to give me a better idea of your needs. *
Have you submitted a sample to me already at chloe@cbalice.com? *
If you'd like to submit a book that's already been formatted, please list what formats they're in and what programs were used.
What's your story? This is just for my curiosity, and I'm looking for keywords like "Super-Spicy Kind of Dark Professional Football Romance featuring a himbo with a breeder kink," not a whole blurb. I'm not trying to stress you out.
How did you find me? I like to know what's working.
