This second survey (in the series of UFS Application Surveys) delves deeper into metrics deemed to be most critical according to the responses of our prior survey. Specifically, we will be asking you about commonly accepted metrics for key sub-seasonal processes, and temporal requirements for verification of each metric.
In the first round of survey, participants ranked the processes relevant for sub-seasonal forecasting as follows:
Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO)
Drought
El Nino - Southern Oscillation (ENSO)
Severe Weather
Fire Weather
Extreme Temperature Events (Warm and Cold)
Arctic and Antarctic Oscillations (AO/AAO) ย
Atmospheric River
Blocking
Quasi Biennial Oscillation (QBO)
Heavy Rainfall events
Tropical Cyclone (TC) activity
Full results of the first survey can be found on the Pre-Workshop Survey 1 page:

This second survey will refine our initial prioritization from the first survey, and one final survey will be forthcoming to assess the need for specific metrics and observational datasets. These topics will also be discussed at the Metrics Workshop (

Thank you for your time and input into the UFS testing and evaluation process!
