2020-2021 RAC Teen Action Council Application
Purpose:
Rise Above Colorado (RAC) is recruiting youth ages 12-17 (or entering grades 6-11 if enrolled in school) for its statewide Teen Action Council (TAC), which represents teen voices in Colorado on healthy alternatives to substance misuse and helps spread the Rise Above message throughout the state. TAC seeks to represent the geographic and personal diversity of youth across Colorado, with specific emphasis on populations most harmed by substance misuse and addiction, including youth with LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Etc.) identities, youth experiencing poverty, and youth in recovery in order to support RAC in effectively reaching youth with the information and skills to make healthy choices. All identities and perspectives are valued by RAC and youth of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and personal history with substance use are encouraged to apply. TAC is a key driver in RAC’s mission and strategy and the organization depends on members’ input, leadership, and inspiration throughout all efforts. Each member will serve a one-year term that will coincide with the 2020-2021 school year with the option to continue for subsequent years should expectations be met.
EXPECTATIONS
Members will be required to attend at least 3 of the 4 in-person 2 day TAC Meetings held in Metro Denver on the following dates in 2020-2021* where they will work with other TAC members to help advance ideas and take action to support RAC’s mission statewide as well as in their own communities. In-person meetings will be 2 full-days (usually 8 hours on Saturday and 6 hours on Sunday), plus an evening of team building at a fun event/venue.

*JUNE 6TH-7TH (If this orientation is missed, it must be made up through a 90 minute online orientation), AUGUST 8TH-9TH, NOVEMBER 7TH-8TH, & MARCH 6TH-7TH

Members should additionally plan to make a commitment of 3 hours per month dedicated to projects, planning, and communication with RAC and other TAC members between meetings, for example:
- Monthly 1-hour meetings through web and/or telephone conferencing are required.
- Each member will be expected to stay engaged by completing planned projects and responding to communications by RAC staff and other TAC members between meetings.
COMPENSATION
RAC values TAC members and their investment of time and will provide a stipend ($10/hour) for all meetings and will pay for all food and entertainment during the meetings and team building activities. Members may also use the meeting time as volunteer community service hours instead of receiving payment. RAC will also sign for community service hours for any hours contributed beyond in-person meetings and team building activities.
MAXIMIZE ABILITY TO PARTICIPATE
RAC is committed to removing financial barriers to participation in the Teen Action Council by reimbursing travel expenses (e.g. lodging and gas mileage).
TRAINING
Teen Action Council (TAC) members will be trained in informal and formal outreach, education strategies, including media literacy, facilitating lessons, and any other additional trainings deemed helpful. TAC has three primary strategies for 2020-2021:

SHARE: TAC is encouraged, but not required, to contribute to the Fill Your World With Good campaign through their own social media accounts. TAC also runs a Snapchat story to complement Rise Above Colorado’s (RAC) larger social media campaign. Past TAC members have shared, liked, or commented on RAC’s social media posts and taken over the TAC Snapchat story to share fun and meaningful events in their communities.

EDUCATE: RAC has a number of prevention lessons (e.g. Prescription Drug Misuse Prevention Lesson, Meth Prevention Lesson, Positive Social Norming Data Discussion, etc) that are designed for teens to facilitate in their own classes or clubs. RAC staff will train and support TAC members interested in contributing to their own community in this way. Past TAC members have presented these lessons in their schools and communities and/or helped to advocate for their use in their school and community by sharing them with teachers and other adults.

ENGAGE: RAC encourages TAC members to find unique ways to engage their own communities and encourage their peers to Rise Above substance misuse and addiction. RAC staff will train TAC and offer support in these efforts. Past TAC members have engaged their communities in several ways including: planning a trash cleanup day with their local youth group, helping to coordinate the creation of a mural in their community, and co-leading local events with RAC staff.
