Please sign our Petition! Tell the Burnett County Supervisors: Factory Farms Harm Our Public Health and Property Values -- It's Time for a Moratorium!
PETITION for Moratorium!!
Cumberland LLC. aka Suidae Health and Production from Iowa has submitted a Preliminary Application to the DNR for a CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) to build 3 barns to confine 26,350 pigs in Northwest Wisconsin, Burnett County, Trade Lake Township. They purchased 12884 STATE RD 48, Grantsburg, WI 54840 adjacent to the tower (owned by AMERICAN TOWER MGMNT INC, 116 Huntington Ave, Boston MA). They are the process of finalizing their application.
We call upon the Burnett County Supervisors to declare a temporary moratorium on the permitting and construction of new and expanding Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), or factory farms, until the numerous and well-documented threats to public health and safety, water quality and quantity, and property values can be studied and protective ordinances drafted and passed.
The Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) guidance on Livestock Facility Siting states that "the state does not restrict counties from imposing temporary moratoria, however there is no specific state statute that addresses this issue.” (
Given that numerous counties in Wisconsin have passed temporary moratoriums on factory farms, we feel a CAFO moratorium in Burnett County is a prudent and reasonable action necessary to protect our quality of life and property values.
