The Women's Coalition of Motorcyclists (WCM) who is dedicated to doubling the number of female riders by 2020. In pursuit of this goal, the WCM partnered with the Office of Highway Safety Planning in the state of Michigan spearheaded by Emily Shinevar, Vulnerable Roadway Users Program Coordinator and Chad Teachout, State Coordinator for the Michigan Rider Education Program to establish a train-the-trainer scholarship program for up to 10 promising WCM paid members to attend the RiderCoach Preparation course to become a certified motorcycle safety coach.
This scholarship will cover the travel and housing cost where applicable for up to 7 candidates accepted to the Michigan Train-the-trainer program. The $75 course registration fee towards materials and instruction for scholarship recipients to attend RiderCoach Preparation Course will be covered in advanced by the selected scholarship winners. Scholarship winners must be paid WCM members at the $12 or above membership category and accepted into one of Michigan’s Train-the-Trainer program. The scholarship will cover up to $300 for meals and mileage if candidate lives within a 60 miles radius of the training course site. Receipts would be required for WCM to reimburse actual amounts spent.
The RiderCoach Preparation Course is a minimum 80 hours of classroom and range activity. This course is periodically offered at various locations throughout the state and may be held over several consecutive days or a few weekends. As part of this course, scholarship recipients will be required to attend and participate in every session, pass a riding-skill test and a knowledge test. WCM Scholarship recipients will learn how to teach in the classroom, how to manage the range exercise, and how to evaluate and coach students as they develop their riding skills. The final requirement for certification as a RiderCoach is successful completion of student teaching to a group of BRC new riders. Successful completion of this training will result in a RiderCoach Certification through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). The MSF is a nationally recognized program that has provided the curriculum followed by all motorcycle safety training providers in the State of Michigan.
This scholarship is geared towards experienced riders with good riding and communication skills, who may qualify to become a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) certified RiderCoach. Becoming an MSF RiderCoach is a great way to improve one's own abilities while helping others to learn or enhance their riding skills.
