I Support a Rent Freeze! Freeze Rents and NoCause Evictions!

While Rent Control is beautiful - we love stable safe communities and lessening commuter traffic - you don't need to support rent control to see that a temporary rent freeze is crucial for staving off a market panic as rent control is considered by the people in Santa Cruz. Please make it safe for democracy by giving us a temporary market protection ordinance.

Then send to the city council (addresses below) and finally sign the petition below if you haven't yet done so.

The story: Santa Cruz has the worst wages-to-rent ratio in California!
In some neighborhoods, 20% of the people pay 70% of their wages in rent!
This needs to stop – Like Richmond, Mountain View and all around the bay, the city council needs to vote to put a temporary freeze on rent increases and no cause evictions. I am signing the petition below...

Background: A rent freeze could be implemented by our city council as a temporary measure to slow the insanity until the voters vote for a full on Rent Control ordinance this fall, and while only Sandy Brown and Chris Krohn supported the initial impulse in October, there is a real chance now that other councilors will hear our call if we make it strong enough. Please email and call David Terrazas, who is the new mayor and has agreed to put rent freeze on the agenda (dterrazas@cityofsantacruz.com (831) 420-5020), Martine Watkins (mwatkins@cityofsantacruz.com (831) 420-5024), and Cynthia Chase (cchase@cityofsantacruz.com (831) 420-5020), and Richelle Noroyan (rnoroyan@cityofsantacruz.com (831) 420-5025), or copy the following into the To: field in your email (dterrazas@cityofsantacruz.com, mwatkins@cityofsantacruz.com, cchase@cityofsantacruz.com, rnoroyan@cityofsantacruz.com, sbrown@cityofsantacruz.com, ckrohn@cityofsantacruz.com) and ask them to support a freeze on rents and no cause evictions. The two arguments are simple: 1) having the worst rent to wages ratio in the state is driving working people out of town and this is bad for traffic, diversity, and community and 2) the city council needs to freeze rents to keep landlords from raising them rapidly to beat the rent control ordinance to the punch.
