The Urban Male Initiative Peer Tutoring Application Fall 2017
MISSION
The Peer Tutoring program is a new addition to the Urban Male Initiative (UMI) at John Jay College where students can get one on one assistance with a tutor or sign up for group tutoring sessions in order to improve their grades, grade point average and academic performance overall. The Urban Male Initiative is open to all students without regard for race, gender, or national origin.

ELIGIBILITY
- Be enrolled as a John Jay undergraduate (60 credits or more) or graduate student
- Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher; have a GPA of 3.5 or higher for your major area of study
- Have at least an A- in the course(s) you want to tutor
- Have strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Have a flexible schedule; must be available to tutor at least 4 hours per week

QUALIFICATIONS
- Have the ability to build strong and positive relationships
- Have strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Have strong organizational and time management skills
- Have the desire to assist students transitioning to college and persist
- Be sensitive to people of different educational, economic, cultural and racial backgrounds

TIME COMMITMENT
- A two (2) semester commitment is required for this position (August 2017- June 2018).
- Peer Tutors must participate in all recruiting events, and info sessions throughout the year.
- Students must be available the week of August 14th for training sessions.
- Students must be able to attend two (2) monthly staff meetings: one group staff meeting and a one-on-one meeting with the Peer Tutoring Coordinator.
