“The deeper we listen, the broader our understanding, and the greater our chances are for finding an access point to cause profound transformation” (Lettecia Kratz, 2012, as cited in Elena Aguilar’s The Art of Coaching, 2013, p. 148).
This Learning Circle is designed for educators interested in developing their student coaching skills, in and out of the classroom. This four-part series will focus on value-based goal setting, reflective listening, and appreciative inquiry, as discussed in Elena Aguilar’s book "The Art of Coaching". The Learning Circle will culminate in participants envisioning their own student training workshop or class activity based on the principles and practices explored in the book. Participants will also receive a copy of "The Art of Coaching" so that they can continue fostering reflective practices in their teaching and leadership.
Learning objectives:
1. By the end of this workshop series, participants will demonstrate an understanding of the connection between values and goals, be able to articulate their own values and goals, and guide students, faculty, and staff in defining personal values and professional goals in order to contribute to our thriving community at Boise State.
2. Workshop participants will rethink listening as an opportunity to connect and transform and then put it into practice through role-play.
3. Participants will brainstorm their personal and professional strengths and apply them to a current challenge, mapping steps toward a solution.
4. Participants will leave with a prototype of a workshop or class activity utilizing the skills we have explored throughout the series.
