Space:
MirrorLab Studios is looking for new artists to join our shared studio workspace. The studios are at 3400 Cedar Ave in South Minneapolis. Our studios include a gallery / exhibition space and three separate areas of open flexible space, shop sinks, shelves for storage, a full darkroom, a small office space with a computer and printer, and a wood shop with basic power and hand tools.
Community:
We want to be as transparent as possible in the communal aspect to the space. We usually work individually on personal projects, but most tools, utilities, and responsibilities are shared. A lot of the main floor and wood shop are shared working space and individual schedules overlap. For those who need it, there is space for a small personal work desk, as well as storage for materials, tools, and work in progress.
With advance planning and general consent, studio members host informal public or invite-only events (studio visits, workshops, screenings, music) in our main floor storefront infrequently. COVID has derailed these events for the most part, but we are using best practices based on the CDC guidelines with regard to rentals and events. We held screenings in our storefront last winter and have yet to fully realize / activate the gallery space for exhibitions but are hoping to establish a semi-regular programming platform that supports our community and we'd love for you to be part of that process. We strongly advocate for a diverse studio, both culturally and across creative discipline, and we encourage any and all persons / bodies to consider joining our collective.
Rent:
Rent + utilities is ~$250 per month, give or take $20. (Our monthly costs fluctuate a bit depending on utility costs and revenue from rentals / events in the space.) We are looking to add 2-3 members over the course of the next few months. We collectively pay for insurance on an annual basis and that usually comes to $50-100 per person.
Who we are looking for:
Artists who are interested in the energy and community atmosphere of working in a large shared space.
Artists who communicate openly and respect others’ work, tools, space, and perspectives.
Artists who expand our diversity, motivate us, and are willing to help maintain our space with us.
Artists who are committed to having a studio for at least 1 year, though we are open to considering temporary membership for the right candidates and/or projects. We can provide further information on our gallery rental rates (daily - weekly) if that use would best fit your needs.
