California Berkeley ülikooli emeriitprofessor Richard Taruskin on tänapäeva väljapaistvaim muusikaloolane, kes on kirjutanud on kirjutanud väga kaalukaid ja uuenduslikke tekste paljudes muusikahistoriograafia valdkondades (muusikaloo metodoloogia, varane muusika, vene muusika: Stravinski, Mussorgski), tema raamat Text and Act: Essays on Music and Performance (Oxford University Press, 1995) muutis põhjalikult muusika esitusprobleemide käsitlemist ning tema kuueköiteline The Oxford History of Western Music (Oxford University Press, 2005) on tänapäeva autoriteetseim ja uuenduslikum lääne muusikaloo käsitlus, ilmselt ulatuslikem, mis on kunagi kirjutatud ühe autori poolt.
Taruskinile on omistatud hulganisti kõrgeid teaduspreemiaid, neist suurim on 2017. aastal antud Kyoto preemia, mida hinnatakse võrdseks Nobeli preemiaga aladel, kus viimast välja ei anta.

Richard Taruskin, a professor emeritus of the University of California, Berkeley is today one of the most outstanding musicologists and music historians. He has written significant writings in numerous areas of music historiography (methodology of musicology, early music, Russian music: Stravinsky, Mussorgsky). His book Text and Act: Essays on Music and Performance (Oxford University Press, 1995) changed fundamentally the way issues in music performance are being covered. His work The Oxford History of Western Music (6 vols., Oxford University Press, 2005) has established itself as the leading and most innovatory approach to western musicology. It is probably also the most extensive approach that has ever been written by one author.
Taruskin has been awarded multiple research prizes. One of the most notables is the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy that he was recognized with in 2017. This prize is considered to be equally high recognition compared to Nobel prize (i.e in areas where Nobel Prize is not granted).

Üritust rahastab Euroopa Liidu Regionaalarengu Fond (Eesti Muusika- ja Teatriakadeemia EMTASTRA projekt).
