As scholars and researchers from the
University of Minnesota and other universities around the world, we condemn the University of Minnesota leadership’s decision to pause the appointment of Dr. Raz Segal, a well-credentialed and widely respected Israeli scholar and genocide expert, to the position of Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS), and we call for the administration to allow his hire to proceed. This is an outrageous violation of both academic freedom and the integrity of the faculty hiring process, dictated by protests from a handful of faculty and outside groups opposed to Dr. Segal’s expert analyses of Israeli violence in Gaza. These objections to Dr. Segal’s appointment stem from a political disagreement with his academic scholarship, his perspective as a scholar of genocide, and his defense of anti-genocide protest.
By overruling the faculty experts who selected Dr. Segal, the University of Minnesota’s administrators have effectively issued a vote of no confidence in its own faculty. This move endangers the University’s reputation as an internationally-renowned research institution.
Dr. Segal is a superlative candidate for the position of Director of CHGS at Minnesota. The University acknowledged that he was “enthusiastically recommended” by the search committee of experts assembled to vet the hire. Contrary to some reported objections that the CHGS board was not fully consulted on the hire, six of the seven search committee members were Center board members, and the CHGS board met with each candidate and was invited to provide feedback on the candidate pool. Multiple University of Minnesota faculty can attest that Dr. Segal was the most qualified applicant for the position. His research profile is extensive and has garnered him both national and international recognition for his expertise in the areas of Holocaust and genocide studies.
The University’s decision to pause this hire reflects an ongoing pattern of drastically different responses to voices supportive of Israel, and to those supportive of Palestinians. The administration has consistently responded favorably to pro-Israel and Zionist demands, while often punishing, or at best, ignoring pro-Palestinian and anti-genocide advocates.
We are further dismayed to learn that outside, non-academic organizations, such as the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC), have apparently worked to pressure University leadership into delaying or blocking Dr. Segal’s appointment. JCRC is a partisan political lobby that, in its own words, is committed to “Israel advocacy.” Academic knowledge production about contemporary political topics, such as current events in Israel and Gaza, cannot be dictated by non-academic advocacy groups backing partisan positions. This mandate against political interference is the essence of academic freedom, which is itself the principle that makes academic work possible in the first place.
We urge the administration to protect the academic reputation of the University of Minnesota by reversing this decision and affirming the consensus selection of Dr. Segal to direct the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
