Speaker Andrea Mansfeld: Materials Engineer at Oceanit Laboratories
As a Materials Engineer, Mansfeld has contributed to the development of multiple Department of Defense and Department of Energy projects. She is responsible for the development and characterization of materials ranging from corrosion-preventing coatings to smart cement. In addition to her work in research and development, Mansfeld has experience in the field doing large-scale testing. Mansfeld is very passionate about promoting STEM to students ranging from elementary school to college and has participated in many outreach opportunities such as college fairs, recruitment events, and science demonstration presentations as an Engineering Ambassador for her university.

Mansfeld is new to Hawaii from Boise, Idaho as of late 2018. She is a recent graduate and her background is mainly in material science and engineering with experience in safety and quality assurance. She has interned with the Department of Energy where she established quality assurance controls and performed oversight of the Hanford nuclear site in Washington state and later interned with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory where her research aided the development of stable nuclear waste glass. She also developed high-temperature resistant polymers to be used as jet fuel lubricants as a research assistant at the University of Idaho under Dr. Mark Roll.

She has a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Idaho where she graduated with special distinction from the Honor’s College.
