Near West Side Community Streets Volunteer Sign-up
The City of Syracuse’s Community Streets program allows community organizations within the City of Syracuse to propose and implement temporary demonstration projects on neighborhood streets. Volunteers from the participating community organizations will utilize paint, moveable barriers, and other materials to change the shape of their streets to improve access and safety for individuals outside of vehicles. The Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council (SMTC) and Adapt CNY are working alongside the City of Syracuse during this pilot year of the program, assisting in guiding project sponsors through the process.

The Near West Side project selected for implementation will install temporary crosswalks and street traffic calming bump-outs at the intersections of Ontario St & Marcellus St, and Ontario St & Gifford St.  The painted bump-outs will include a polka-dot and flower pattern that artists will be invited to add flourishes to the base design.  The existing crosswalks at the intersection of Ontario St and Otisco St will be colorized.  We'll also be adding 2-tiered tire planters of native perennial flowers at each intersection curb.
The install date will be Sunday July 21 with a rain date of Sunday July 28.  We will need a minimum of 15 volunteers on the day of the event, and others for the lead-up to prepare materials and planters.  Please RSVP today to volunteer.  If you have additional questions please email
