Description: As the SIAM chapter at Notre Dame, we promote all aspects of student development professionally, including healthy lifestyles and stress management. Recognizing that approximately 1/3 of graduate students are at risk of developing psychiatric disorders (http://goo.gl/Cd3w4q), Dean Vanderford of Univ. of Kentucky states “The rates of mental health issues in [graduate student] population are elevated pretty significantly above the general population.”
Thus, the purpose of this outreach seminar is to provide a safe space in which students can have open discussions about how to deal with stress and find ways to balance work and life in graduate school. Students will learn that they are not alone in this process! Students will also learn to recognize signs and symptoms of stress, as well as incorporate self-care activities into their daily life. The outreach seminar also hopes to raise awareness of mental health and help students navigate resources available for them.
