This has been a 2-3 year process that has been brewing in my mind after a couple years of my own involvement with drag. A little context for why I want to create this group with other folks: In the Fall of 2011, I performed in drag for the first time. I had a lot of pent up nervousness/anxiousness doing this, because of the gender expectations that were engrained in me from an early age about what it meant for me to be an Asian American - Southeast Asian (Lao & Vietnamese) man. For me, drag was something that countered all of those expectations and norms about masculinity - especially within the Southeast Asian community. There was a feeling of empowerment and liberation that I felt after my performance - that I was unpacking and deconstructing my own understanding of gender, especially as it related to masculinity and femininity.
I am looking to connect and build with other AAPI drag artists who may be interested in growing this with me, and/or joining the group. This form is so I can gauge who may be interested, what you might be looking for from this space, and any other thoughts that you would like to share.
If you have any additional questions and/or want more information, please feel free to reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is something that I am excited to build with folks long-term, and as of this spring, the Asian American Resource Workshop has agreed to support this initiative of mine.
