Informed Consent for Adult Participants
You are invited to participate in the research project entitled “Mass Media Use and Endorsement of Hook-Up Culture” conducted by Gia Gencic in collaboration with Dr. Anne Gilman of the Psychology Department at the College of Saint Rose. You must be at least 18 years old to participate.
During the time that you participate in this study, you will be asked to answer questions about your views about and experiences (if any) with dating behavior. Many of these questions are personal in nature. At the end of the study, you will also be asked to identify your year in school (if applicable), your relationship status (if applicable), your age range, your gender, your sexual orientation, and your race by choosing between several options. If you do not feel comfortable answering a question during the session, you can choose not to respond to that question.
The study will take no more than 30 minutes to complete, and you will receive 1 SONA credit for participation if you are part of the Saint Rose Psychology Department Participant Pool.
There are no known physical risks or discomforts associated with this research. Your participation is voluntary. You are free to decide not to participate in this study or to withdraw at any time without adversely affecting your relationship with the investigator or the College of Saint Rose. Your refusal to participate will involve no penalty to you or loss of any benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. You may also skip any questions that you do not wish to answer without penalty.
Knowledge generated through this study will help researchers to better understand how young adults view dating. Such knowledge can help us all gain a more realistic view of media influences on dating behavior.
The results of this study may be published, but your name and identity will not be revealed and all of the data and information collected from you will remain confidential. All data will be identified with numbers that have no links to you as a research participant and will be kept in password-protected computer files for a period of one year or less after which it will be destroyed. In the case that fewer than five people choose a particular answer on the demographic survey (e.g. only two people say they are between 25 and 30 years old, that demographic category will not be reported on separately, to protect all participants’ confidentiality.
If at any time you have questions about the procedure in this project, you may contact me, Gia Gencic at gencicg077@strose.edu.
