Food Canning Workshops - 2026

GOAL - Create food security in North Kohala.

HOW - Preserve local foods! We have a bounty of fruits, vegetables, and meats that can be canned so that they are shelf stable without requiring refrigeration, allowing you to enjoy the fruits of your labor beyond a single growing season. Learn the science behind canning and the proper techniques for water bath or high pressure canning using tested recipes to preserve delicious stews and other dishes. Canned food is at peak quality when consumed within a year, but properly canned foods are safe to eat even many years later. Foods we preserve ourselves can be made from fresh, local ingredients without harmful preservatives, pesticides, or other chemicals.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND - Anyone who wants ready-to-eat nutritious food on hand, young families, those caring for kūpuna, people interested in local food, those with an excess of produce or fruit from their yard, and anyone who would like to be prepared for natural disasters.

COST - Donation of $10 to secure your spot and to support the Kohala Ono Foods Hui.

WHEN - We are offering five workshops in 2026.

Our workshops fill up quickly! Participants are limited to 15. If the workshop you want to apply for is full, please register to be placed on our waitlist below in case we get cancellations.

  • Workshop 1 - Water bath method - Saturday, Feb. 21 (8:00 am - 5:00 pm) AND Sunday, Feb. 22 (8:00 am - 9:00 am)
  • Workshop 2 - High pressure method - Saturday, Feb 28 (8:00 am - 5:00 pm) AND Sunday, Mar 1 (8:00 am - 9:00 am)
  • Workshop 3 - Water bath method - Thursday, Mar 5 (8:00 am - 5:00 pm) AND Friday, Mar 6 (8:00 am - 9:00 am) 
  • Workshop 4 - High pressure method - Saturday, Apr 11 (8:00 am - 5:00 pm) AND Sunday, Apr 12 (8:00 am - 9:00 am)
  • Workshop 5 - Fermentation and water bath methods - Thursday, May 21 (8:00 am - 5:00 pm)
