Fair Maps Texas will be working with local community partners to plan a Redistricting Town Hall Tour that will take place in the historical congressional districts that the State unlawfully targeted in their mid-census redistricting. Our goal for the town hall tour will be to:
Inform the community about the new district boundaries;
Discuss the potential impact of the new map on various policies and federal services and connect folks with community-based resources to help counter the negative impacts of the new map; and
Above all, we want to emphasize that your vote still matters in races up and down the ballot and that voting is a powerful tool of resistance!
At the town halls, we will also be working on a storytelling campaign that will leverage our community's deep history and cultural identity to defy the State's latest attempt at erasure. We will be documenting and sharing the rich history of these communities and how they have evolved over the years. We also will be sharing important voting rights milestones that helped shape congressional representation for these districts and will be highlighting the contributions made by previous congressional members. We must remember that our community's history can never be bound by state mandates. By telling these stories, we will be empowering community members to resist simply by sharing their lived experiences.
Looking back at the systems of oppression that have been in play over the past 150 years, change has never come in a single day. It was won through a steady beat of moral resistance –– direct action, mutual aid, litigation, and collective remembrance of who we really are. This is our strategy, our story, our resistance. We hope that you will join in and find new ways to build power together!
