Our vision for the Seal River Watershed Indigenous Protected Area is to ensure our grandchildren’s grandchildren have the opportunity to engage in traditional practices such as hunting, fishing and serving as guardians of the land and animals within a healthy watershed.

To achieve our goal of permanently protecting the Seal River Watershed from industrial development, we must ensure the Initiative continues to gather grassroots support amongst the Seal River Watershed Alliance communities: Sayisi Dene First Nation, Northlands Denesuline First Nation, O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation, Barren Lands First Nation, and the Kivalliq region of Nunavut.

The Seal River Watershed Alliance is asking community members to share important land-use information so we can make sure that our work to protect our lands, waters and wildlife reflects the values and needs of our communities.

Gathering community member input about the stewardship of the watershed, including caribou stewardship, fire management, and cultural eco-tourism, helps the Alliance when negotiating with Crown governments.

We are also using this survey to determine whether community members would be interested in joining an Advisory Committee (hunters and trappers, land-users, women, youth, elders, etc.) or conducting an interview to share Indigenous Knowledge that would support the creation of an Indigenous Protected Area.

We will keep individual answers confidential. The combined results may be published without identifying who participated.

This survey is the first of many opportunities to gather your input about the future of this protected area. Please visit our website for more information about the Initiative:
