#AskFirstRI Pledge
What is it?
By signing onto the #AskFirstRI pledge, hospitality businesses commit to only give straws to customers upon request, instead of automatically putting a straw in a customer’s drink.

Why are we doing this?

Americans throw away half a billion straws every day. Eight million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year. Disposable plastic straws are not recyclable; therefore, they often end up in landfills, oceans, or the environment.

We are the Ocean State and keeping our oceans clean is an integral part of maintaining business in Rhode Island! RIHA is committed to educating our members on the how to reduce our environmental impact in practical, businesses friendly ways. By only providing plastic straws when requested, we can significantly reduce the disposal of single use plastic. Such a simple action will not only save on overheads, it will have incredibly positive and far reaching effects on our planet.

How to take the pledge

1. Take the #AskFirstRI pledge

2. Do not automatically garnish beverages with a straw! Only provide them to customers upon request.

3. Spread the word! The more people we educate, the bigger impact we will have! Use the hashtag #AskFirstRI on social media to tell your customers and other restaurants that your business has taken the pledge!
