When it rains, storm water runoff carries pollutants (e.g. litter, oil, soil, hazardous substances), into our waterways. This type of pollution is called non-point source (NPS) pollution. More than 90% of NPS pollutants come from residential areas, golf courses, agricultural fields, parking lots and construction sites. Polluted runoff poses a great threat to the quality of drinking water across the nation. The River-Friendly Resident Program is designed to help residents reduce the amount of non-point source pollution generated by their properties.
