Dear Rector Sebastian Schütze,

We are writing as concerned students, professors, scholars and members of the academic community to express our dismay at the unprecedented cancellation of the teach-in series titled Against the Present: Past and Future Perspectives on Palestine, co-organized by the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (IKSA) at the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Department of Gender Studies at the Central European University. We also express our condemnation of the removal of the statement Against Violence in Israel and Palestine from the IKSA departmental webpage. 

On November 3rd, the Rectorate announced the cancellation of the teach-in series through a thread on X (previously Twitter), citing “one-sided representations, intolerance, racism and antisemitism” as reasons for the cancellation. We firmly reject this false and misleading portrayal of the speakers and of the series. We vehemently oppose the silencing of our colleagues. This cancellation is a flagrant violation of the principles of academic freedom. It is an attack on freedom of expression and the free exchange of ideas. It is also a disturbing departure from basic academic principles, not the least of which is the cultivation and circulation of academic knowledge on matters of great public importance. 

We alert the Rectorate and the wider academic community that the teach-ins followed a call for learning about Palestine in this current moment. In responding to this call, we have followed our disciplines’ commitments to challenging reductive and essentialist positions. Hence, we brought together a renowned group of anthropologists and gender studies scholars:

4. Associate Professor Darryl Li, University of Chicago
5. Professor Ilana Feldman, George Washington University

All scholars generously offered their expertise and knowledge to students, faculty members, and staff at the University of Vienna and at the Central European University to seize this critical historical moment as one of teaching and learning.  

We also note that the two most important professional associations in the discipline of anthropology in the world – the American Anthropological Association (AAA) and the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) – have each published principled, unequivocal statements condemning the violence of recent weeks in Israel and Palestine. 

Further, on November 3rd, the Rectorate also unilaterally and without consultation removed the statement Against Violence in Israel and Palestine issued and signed by a number of students and faculty members from IKSA. We strongly condemn this erasure of critical voices within the university, and understand it as an act of coercion into silence. Notably, a separate statement on the website of the Department of Political Science – also signed by individuals – has not been removed. The University’s one-sided attack on pro-Palestinian critical voices is unacceptable.  

Both, the cancellation of the teach-in series and the deletion of the statement, remain unexplained. The organizers and signatories have yet to hear from the Rectorate regarding legal and political grounds for the justification of the teach-in cancellation, especially as the event followed all internal procedural requirements.

We are alarmed that such forms of silencing, censorship and erasure of scholarship on Palestine, while not new to many academic institutions in Austria, set a new precedent at the University of Vienna. It is especially concerning that the Rectorate prohibits scholarship on Palestine from being heard at the University of Vienna at a time when extreme violence is being committed against Palestinians. 

We remind the Rectorate that the teach-in series was a collaborative endeavor between IKSA and the Department of Gender Studies at the Central European University. CEU Gender Studies went on to host the teach-ins without collaboration from IKSA. The cancellation has caused irreparable damage to IKSA’s reputation and to academic relations and networks fostered over years of collaborative work between the organizers and the speakers. Furthermore, the cancellation of the teach-in series has demonstrated to the academic community the disregard that the Rectorate of the University of Vienna holds for hearing the perspectives of scholars of Palestine. This undermines the University’s own ideals as an internationally acclaimed institution for higher education.

In light of the previous recount of events, we, the signatories, ask the Rectorate of the University of Vienna for the following: 

1. A transparent and clear public explanation of the course of actions that the Rectorate took in issuing this cancellation.
2. A public apology by the Rectorate of the University of Vienna for giving in to accusations made by external parties, without evidence or consultation with the parties concerned.    
3. A reversal of the decision to remove and censor the statement issued by IKSA students and staff in adherence to principles of academic freedom.
4. Clearly formulated policies and practices that ensure such incursions on academic freedom and freedom of expression and association will not be condoned nor practiced in the future.
