About Kolam, The Math-Art
The Indian Art, Kolam (Math Art) is a form of geometrical line drawing from South India that are believed to bring the Goddess of prosperity and wealth to homes. Since olden days, every morning in Tamil Nadu, millions of women draw Kolam in front of their homes with rice flour, to feed the ants, birds or other small creatures; a daily tribute to harmonious co-existence. The women capture, encode, and decode the image in their memory with much clarity before reproducing it on the ground. Kolam is composed of curved loops, knots, drawn around a grid of dots, which sometimes represents flowers, birds, etc, with colours during festivals; a pure blend of math and creativity. It is proven to be useful for activating/training human brain and can be called as an “Ethnomathematical” activity.
