Plough & Stars CSA Membership Agreement 2017

We, the farmers of Plough & Stars Project, in partnership with the Farm School, wish to provide fresh, local, sustainably-grown food and you, our neighbor, wish to receive a portion of our harvest. This agreement outlines our shared commitments to that relationship.

    Becoming a Part of Our Farm

    Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a relationship between farmer and customer. Rather than simply purchasing food, our customers become “members” of our farm and purchase a share of the farm’s harvest at the start of the growing season. Our CSA runs for approximately 20 weeks, from mid-June to late-October. Our CSA is a market-style CSA. Each week, members will have the chance to choose a predetermined number of items, usually 8-11 items. Depending on the veggie in question (and the point in the season), an ‘item’ might be defined as:
 • A pint or quart of something (blueberries, cherry tomatoes, snap peas, strawberries) • A generous bunch (greens, carrots)
 • 1-2 pounds of something (eggplants, cukes, slicing tomatoes, peppers, onions) • A head of cabbage or lettuce
 • 1/2 lb of salad mix
 • One melon

    The Products We Expect for 2017

    Availability of certain crops is determined by season. Early in the spring, you can expect a lot of salad greens (arugula, kale, lettuce). Mid way through the year, fruiting crops (tomatoes, eggplant and peppers) make it into the mix and in fall, many the storage crops (winter squash, cabbage, onions) arrive. We rotate through more than 100 varieties over the course of the summer and strive to have roots, greens (cooking and salad), alliums (onion family), herbs, fruiting crops and a specialty items (heading veggies like broccoli) at every pick up. The table below outlines many of the main vegetables we are planning to deliver and when we expect them to be available in your share. This chart is based on our best estimate, but of course weather, pests and other variables will affect production.

    Picking Up Your Shares

    Members are responsible for picking up their produce each week from our house at 75 Capen St. in Medford, during the designated pick-up hours of 5:00 - 7:00 pm on Tuesdays. We will send you a weekly email reminder and notify you of the vegetables we'll have on hand. Please bring your own reusable bags to distributions. If you cannot pick up your share, we ask that you arrange for someone else to pick it up for you. If all else fails, we will do our best to accommodate a late pick up. Shares that are not accounted for by Thursday of the same week will be donated. We take the safety of your food seriously and pre-wash most of your produce. However, some crops store better unwashed such as eggplant, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, onion and garlic. For your added protection, we recommend washing all produce before eating.

    Member Fees

    A share in Plough & Stars 2017 CSA can be purchased for $775 ($800 for a split share). We’re happy to accommodate folks who’d like to break up their membership into two payments, as long as the final payment is received by May 1st. Neighbors are welcome to split a share but there will be certain items that may be difficult to divide (see below). Once harvest season begins (June), all fees are non-refundable and must be applied to year in which they were collected.

    An VERY IMPORTANT Note about Splitting Shares

    Our weekly share is designed to feed a family of 4 (with 2 kids) or 2 veggie-happy adults (like us). If that feels like too much produce, you’re welcome to split a share with a neighbor. This could mean you alternate weeks picking up your produce, or you can split each distribution down the middle. If you choose to do the former, understand that some items may not be available on two different weeks. If you choose the latter, know that certain items may be difficult to divide (ex. a pint of snap peas, an eggplant, etc). Those who choose to split a memberships MUST be pick up their shared produce at the same time and may not be able to choose duplicate quantities of the same item (two servings of cucumbers may be okay. Two bags of arugula may not). We can help match members seeking half shares but unfortunately can't help with coordinating your weekly pickups.

    Volunteering

    Though it is not mandatory, we hope people will consider hanging out with us for an extra 3 hours over the course of the season by helping run a CSA distribution or plan a harvest party. Volunteering is a great way to get to know each other and many hands make your farmers very happy.

    Communicating With Us

    We encourage all of our members to become active participants in the CSA Program. You can do this by staying up to date with the news from the farm (by reading the blog, our photo updates and weekly newsletters) and keeping in touch. Communication is critical! Please reach out to us often with your comments, suggestions and concerns. This is one of the great perks of CSAs - you can actually talk to the farmer who grew your food!
