Help Us Document Jail Deaths
Deaths inside American jails frequently go unnoticed, sometimes even unrecorded. Each year, around 1,000 people die in jail, but very few details are publicly released, even to agencies within the federal government charged with jail oversight. To fill this gap, The Huffington Post has created a database to count jail deaths that occurred during the year after the death of Sandra Bland: from July 13, 2015 to July 13, 2016.
If you have information about a death that occurred in a jail or police lockup in this period, or further details about a person listed in our database, you can contact us using the form below. (Please note this database does not include prison deaths.) Our reporters will review your submission and the database will be updated as new information becomes available.
Tell us about a death that occurred in a jail. Share as many details as possible. (Person's name, age, cause of death, circumstances of the arrest):
Do you know the date on which the death occurred? (Leave blank if you aren't sure).
Do you know where the death occurred? Any details about location are helpful. Please let us know the state, county or name of the jail.
If you have any news articles that provide more details, please share those links here.
If you would like us to follow up with you, please leave your contact information (email or phone number). Thank you for your help.
