TED XII ELT CONFERENCE

FULL SPEED AHEAD: THE PRESENT IS ALREADY PAST
TED ANKARA COLLEGE 7-8 APRIL 2020
Dear Colleagues,

We are all familiar with the ‘4 Cs’ (creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration) generally seen as integral to effective 21st century learning. However, considering that we are already 20% of the way through the 21st century, maybe we now need to start thinking beyond the year 2099. Given the slow pace at which 21st learning is progressing, maybe we need to leap directly to the 22nd century! After all, it is perfectly possible (and a bit shocking!) that children currently studying in your school may well live to see the 22nd century.

Of course, projecting as far as 80 years into the future is an almost hopeless task. We will, however, probably need to prepare our learners for situations/competencies such as:

• careers which may not even currently exist
• environmental competence; cultural competence; global competence (plus interstellar competence??)
• how to cope with/manage information overload
• how to best utilise increased leisure time/longer lives
• how to cope with rapid change
• perceiving problems and creating solutions
• a new conception of ‘knowledge’ (e.g. knowledge that is not easily measured)
• greater emphasis on individual learning (‘human-centred learning’)
• innovative ways of responding to new situations
At the moment, there is little agreement as to what 22nd century skills actually are. You are welcome then to interpret the theme however you wish and to give free rein to your imagination. Even though you will probably be retired by the year 2100, think about which 22nd (...or advanced 21st) century skills we can implement in our classrooms right now in 2020… So, bring your jetpack to Ankara and help us to anticipate the future!
