As the Illinois nominee for the regional Teacher of the Year Award, a teacher will participate in an award process, starting among Illinois candidates to select an ICTFL representative at the regional level: the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. One candidate will be selected that the regional level to represent CSCTFL at ACTFL.
Per the ACTFL website, “The proposal to establish a national award for Foreign Language Teacher of the Year is intended to elevate the status of our profession at the state, regional, and national levels by creating opportunities for recognizing the most accomplished members of our profession. First and foremost, this proposal is designed to involve all of our state, regional and national organizations in promoting our profession. Second, it is intended to create as many media opportunities as possible to increase the visibility of the importance of learning languages and cultures to the general public.”
We hope that each region of ICTFL will participate in the selection of an ICTFL Teacher of the Year by nominating a teacher. Our state winner will compete at the regional level, with one teacher being named by CSCTFL to go on to compete at ACTFL, for recognition as the National Foreign Language Teacher of the Year. Recipients will receive complimentary registration for the ICTFL WinterFest and the ICTFL Fall Conference for Friday and Saturday. They will also receive a one year’s complimentary membership in the Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and an award certificate, which will be presented at the Fall Conference event. The award does not cover travel to the conference, breakfast, lodging, or the cost of special workshops.
A list of materials needed in this portfolio is included as a checklist below on this page. Evidence of quality teaching will be determined from letters of recommendation, samples of student work, written reflection on classroom competency, etc. Applicants must be a current member of ACTFL. Note: Attendance at past ICTFL Conferences and/or participation on the ICTFL Board or committees should be noted on your curriculum vitae. Although this is no longer required, it will be considered in the ratings and will be advantageous to your application. Membership in ICTFL is required.
