What: Body Love Open Mic

Where and When: Saturday November 16th at the Monkey House in Berkeley. 1638 University Ave. Wheelchair accessible.

Why: With so many messages coming at us every day saying our bodies are not good enough, we all need to actively seek out counter messaging.  The goal of the Body Love Open Mic is to encourage the truth inside us that says “actually, you’re great just as you are.”

Details: Each performer will get a 5 min slot for one Body Love art piece--- a song, poem, dance, spoken word, monologue, story, etc. Originals preferred, though you’re welcome to do a cover if it feels right to you.

What is Body Love art? Art that’s about how inherently awesome our bodies are. It could be explicitly what you love about your body or what your body can do, or it might be more subtle. There is a lot of great art out there about people hating their bodies. I suppose body hate can make for good art too, but it’s not for this show. This show is about a collective uplifting.
Obviously Body Love art does not include oppressive language*. But you already know this because ultimately oppression is about targeting bodies, and we are creating a pro-body, anti-oppressive space. If you’re not sure if the content of your piece meets the Body Love art vibe, just ask!
