    Information and consent

You are being invited to participate in a research study. Before you decide whether to participate, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it involves. Please read the following information carefully and feel free to ask us if you would like more information or if there is anything that you do not understand. Feel free to discuss this with anyone else if you wish. You do not have to accept this invitation and should only agree to take part if you want to. We are very grateful to you for considering this invitation.

What is the purpose of the study?

The Acoustics Research Unit (ARU) at the University of Liverpool (UK) is conducting research on attitudes to noise in dwellings and this survey forms part of this research.

Am I eligible to take part?

We are looking for volunteers who are aged over 18 years old and who live in London.

Do I have to take part?

You are under no obligation to take part in this study; it is your choice. If you do decide to take part, you are free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason.

What will happen if I take part?

The weblink will take you to the Google questionnaire website (Google Forms). You will be asked to complete a series of questions. The study will take approximately 15 minutes.

Are there any risks in taking part?

No risks are anticipated if you take part.

Are there any benefits in taking part?

We hope you will find it interesting to participate in this survey. The main benefit is that you will be contributing to a body of research knowledge to understand attitudes to noise heard inside dwellings. There is no financial reimbursement.

What if I am unhappy or if there is a problem?

If you are unhappy, or if there is a problem, please feel free to let us know by contacting Dr Lee (details below) and we will try to help. If you remain unhappy or have a complaint which you feel you cannot come to us with then you should contact the University of Liverpool Research Governance Officer on +44 151 794 8290 (ethics@liv.ac.uk). When contacting the Research Governance Officer, please provide details of the name or description of the study (so that it can be identified), the researcher(s) involved, and the details of the complaint you wish to make.

What will happen to the results of the study?

All the information collected about you during the course of the research will be anonymous. We will seek to publish the report in conference and journal papers but you will not be identifiable from this.

Will my participation be kept confidential?

The information you give us will be securely stored. We do not ask for your name, your date of birth or your full address. We only request your postcode to identify the area or street in which you live. This helps us to identify environmental noise sources near where you live (e.g. an airport). Your data will be anonymised in all published results from the survey.

Will my taking part be covered by an insurance scheme?

Participants taking part in any study that has been approved by the University of Liverpool are covered by the University insurance scheme.

What will happen if I want to stop taking part?

If for any reason you leave the website during the questionnaire, your answers will be automatically deleted, but you can start again another time, just by accessing the website again, through the same web link. The data will only be stored on the website after you fill out all the required questions and you click the submit button. If you want to withdraw after submitting the data, please email us at aru_survey@liv.ac.uk with the date of your submission and your postcode (exactly as you wrote on the survey). We will then find your results in our database and delete them.

Who can I contact if I have further questions?

The contact details for the Principal Investigator on this project are: Dr Lee Acoustics Research Unit, School of Architecture Abercromby Square, University of Liverpool, Liverpool L69 7ZN, UK Email: aru_survey@liv.ac.uk
