Urban Scenographies: Sm'Arting the City
Sm’Arting the City is a hands-on exploratory workshop that will take participants on a journey of embodied and performative considerations of smartness. Situated at the intersection of various theoretical frameworks on the subjects of technology, tracking and big data, to meaning-making and spatial agency, the workshop invites participants to speculate on ways of sm’arting the city through critical playful interventions and actions in the urban environment. We will explore through collective intelligence and interconnectedness, situatedness and memory, as well as lo-tech applications, other ways of experiencing instances of smartness in the city.
Questions of space and place will be brought to the forefront of the workshop: How are our notions of urban place and space altered in relation to smartness? Can characteristics of meaning-making like memory, feeling, and atmosphere find a place within the design of smart cities, and what shape could these urban environments take? What can we learn from unpredictability and hacking as performative approaches to experimenting with smartness?
This workshop is organized and facilitated by members of the PULSE research team and will take place at Concordia’s 4th Space as part of the NextGenCities programming.
