Interested students from the Milwaukee area colleges and universities are encouraged to apply. Selected students will participate in a year long curriculum (October 2018-May 2019) taught by area professors and educators. Students will take a deep dive into eastern European Jewish history, segueing to the rise of anti-semitism and Nazi Germany, and concluding with a intensive study of the Holocaust and it's impact on Poland, once the home of the largest number of Jews in the world.
Students will be given assigned readings and class attendance and participation is mandatory. Classes will be held 1-2x per month on Thursday nights from 6-8pm. Attendance to larger community Holocaust remembrance events are also required.
The 10 day trip to Germany and Poland is tentatively set for May 20-30, 2019. The trip will depart from Chicago and students are expected to provide their own transportation to/from O'Hare airport. Students will also be expected to contribute $500 towards the cost of the trip, plus some meals. Fundraising efforts will take place to help students earn the eligible funds.
Eligibility:* The applicant must be a full time student at one of Hillel Milwaukee's campuses.* Graduating students are not eligible.* Must be able to commit to Thursday evening sessions and be able to travel in late May as described above.
Requirements:*Participation in year long curriculum. Students may not miss more than 1 class during the year.*Participation in post trip wrap up session.*Committed to participating in at least 1 Holocaust education / leadership initiative on campus.
