We, the undersigned business owners and representatives, write to respectfully urge you to use your authority to stop the Port Ambrose Liquefied Natural Gas project.
As members of the business community, we are acutely sensitive to how Port Ambrose could harm local businesses, cost jobs, and further entrench an unsustainable economic model. Port Ambrose could damage our vital fishing, recreation, and tourism sectors. At the same time, it would preclude the creation of many more jobs in wind energy.
This proposed facility, to be located off the coasts of Long Island and Queens, would threaten our health, safety, environment, and economic activities. Specifically, Port Ambrose would:
- Harm our beaches, ocean ecology, and wildlife, as well as the people, communities, businesses, and industries that rely on them;
- Present a public safety threat, with explosive gas risking thousands of lives;
- Block a wind energy facility proposed for the same offshore location;
- Encourage fracking, a dangerous and polluting method of gas drilling, and expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure.
Lastly, as you know, the region where Port Ambrose would be built was hard-hit by Superstorm Sandy. There is overwhelming opposition to this project from Long Beach and the Rockaways, the communities who would be most impacted by the project. The undersigned business owners and representatives join together, with these communities to urge you to veto the Port Ambrose project.
We hope that you’ll further your legacy as a climate leader by stopping this dangerous project. We appreciate your leadership in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and moving towards a clean energy economy.
Thank you for your consideration.
